St Hilary and Hayle Valley circular walk
  1. Facing the road with the waste tips on your right, bear right onto the lane (keeping the waste tips on your right) and immediately right again to join another wide stony track. Follow the track until you reach a fork with a sign for Lantern Cottage.

    Halamanning mine and neighbouring Retallack mine began in the 18th century and were worked for copper with steam engines in the late 18th Century but closed in the early 19th Century.

    Halamanning reopened in the early 1830s and both tin and copper ore were raised, but this was insufficient to make a profit and the mine closed again in 1836.

    In 1851 the mine reopened once more and this time was worked with Croft Gothal mine primarily for copper until 1858. Despite raising 13,400 tonnes of copper ore, the high operating costs eroded the profits.

  2. At the fork, take the right-hand of the stony tracks leading ahead and follow this to another fork.

    Common honeysuckle is a native plant also known as woodbine because it wraps itself around other plants and can cause distortions in their growth also called woodbines. Honeysuckle might be regarded as having plant OCD in that it only ever entwines in a clockwise direction.

    Honeysuckle flowers appear from June to August and their fragrance is due to a class of chemical compounds known as jasminoids that occur in, as you might have guessed, jasmine but also Ceylon tea. Honeysuckle is the food plant of the White Admiral caterpillar so keep a look for the butterflies in summer.

    In autumn, honeysuckle produces shiny red berries that resemble redcurrants. They are toxic to humans and to dogs, but not to birds.

  3. Keep right and keep following the stony track, ignoring tracks into field entrances. Continue on the stony track as it turns downhill and follow it to a junction of tracks with a tree stump.

    An impressively purple blackberry, pear and ginger chutney can be made with blackberries stashed in the freezer. Simmer 500g blackberries, a few chilli flakes, 4 chopped pears and a finely-chopped 8cm piece of fresh ginger until the liquid reduces. Add 150ml distilled or white wine vinegar, and sugar to taste (amount will depend on tartness of the blackberries). Reduce a bit longer until the desired "gloopy" consistency is achieved and finally season with a little salt to taste to balance the sweetness.

  4. Bear left at the junction and keep following the stony track downhill, past the entrance to "Croft Gothal". Continue to reach a junction of tracks with a Restricted Byway sign and waymark post.

    Primroses prefer moist soils so they tend to grow either in semi-shady places which don't get dried out too much by the sun such as woodland clearings and the base of hedgerows, or in wet open ground such as near streams.

    Extracts from ivy were used in herbal remedies and still form the basis of some modern-day cough medicines. It is said to have both antibacterial and antiviral properties. A study for English Heritage also found that roadside ivy absorbed particulates from the atmosphere which may lead to its use in improving air quality.

  5. Turn left and follow the bridleway to where the track widens beside the entrance to a house.

    Rowan is a small, deciduous tree that is native to Britain and is also known as "mountain ash" because it grows at high altitudes and the thin leaves superficially resemble ash leaves. However, rowan is actually a member of the rose family.

    Another name for rowan is "(wild) service tree". This came about because the Old English name of the tree was syrfe and thus the "service" is in the sense of "serf".

    Orange berries appear in July and, once ripe in late August-early September, can be used to make jams. The raw berries are too bitter to eat and contain a chemical that causes indigestion and can lead to kidney damage. Cooking the berries converts this chemical into a benign compound. Freezing reduces the bitterness so this can be done prior to cooking. In the days before freezers, waiting until the first frost before picking was used to achieve something similar.

    Rowan is also sometimes called the "chequer tree", perhaps due to the spotted pattern of the fruit, and berries themselves are called "chequers". The berries were used to flavour beer and spirits which is thought to be the origin of the pubs with this name. However the Chequers Estate (country estate gifted to the nation in 1917 on the assumption that forthcoming Prime Ministers might not be from the landed gentry and therefore would be in need of one) is thought to be unrelated (instead based on "Exchequer").

  6. Continue ahead on the stony track to where a grassy track forks off to the right.
  7. Keep left on the stony track and follow it between two lakes to where it forks on the far side

    Moorhens are water birds which is the basis of names including "waterhen" and the more entertaining "swamp chicken". The name mor-hen was recorded in the 13th Century and is from an old word for marsh that also gave rise to "mire", rather than simply "moorland".

    Moorhens are close relatives to coots but have red-and-yellow beaks rather than white. Like coots, they are aggressive in the breeding season. Unlike coots, they are not aggressive the rest of the time too! The older moorhen chicks will even help their parents to raise the young ones. Moorhens also spend more time out of the water than coots and will even climb trees.

  8. Keep left at the fork (the path to the right is a dead end with a nice view of the lake if you want to have a look first) and follow the track to a junction with a waymark post.

    A tin mine operated in the area that is now wooded (but wasn't at the time), known as "Wolla Old Mine" in the 18th Century and Tindene Mine in Victorian times. During the 19th Century, two engine houses were built for pumping engines to drain the low-lying ground. Alluvial deposits were worked between 1929 and 1944, forming some of the lakes.

  9. Turn left and follow the path to another junction of paths with a waymark post.

    During Victorian times and probably also during the 18th Century, a leat ran alongside the footpath. The fairly long leat carried water from a dammed area of the river though the workings of Wolla Old Mine to power waterwheels. Alongside the footpath here there was a complex arrangement of leat channels and reservoirs with raised footways to cross them. The Relubbus stream that feeds the large lake was also part of this system of waterways. By the 1900s, the leat system had fallen out of use and the stream returned to the main river near here rather then flowing along the canalised route through Relubbus.

  10. Turn right at the fork and follow the path to emerge on a track beside a metal fence.
  11. Bear left onto the track and follow it through a small settlement. Keep following the track until it eventually ends in a junction with a road.

    As you approach the settlement, the first car park on the right is where a stamping mill was located during the 18th and 19th Centuries. The course of the river was diverted away from the buildings and a small leat nearer the buildings brought water to power a waterwheel.

  12. Turn right and walk a couple of paces over the bridge, then turn left onto the tarmac track with the River Valley Country Park signs. Follow the track until a small path departs to the left between a large tree and where the left side of the track becomes hedged.

    Relubbus was recorded in 1250 as Reslehoubes. The first part of the name is thought to be based on rid - the Cornish word for ford, with the rest possibly from a personal name. The ford over the River Hayle was upgraded to a bridge in mediaeval times, first mentioned in 1300. The current bridge dates from the 19th Century.

  13. Bear left onto the riverside path and follow this to where it returns to the track.

    On the opposite side of the river from the large tree is where the Relubbus stream met the River Hayle after it was channelled though Relubbus. In the centre of Relubbus, a corn mill and ore crushing mill were built alongside the canalised stream.

  14. Continue on the track until another small path departs to the left just after Rose Cottage.
  15. Bear left onto the small path and follow this until it returns to the track but keep left as another path departs beside the "slow down ramps" sign. Follow the path along the river to a bridge.

    Dissolved metals are normally toxic to trout but there is evidence that the brown trout population in the Hayle river has evolved to be able to cope with the high mineral levels in the water. A gene responsible for the production of a protein which detoxifies metals was found to be highly expressed in the Hayle river population and other proteins were found that bind and transport iron (one of the most common metals leaching from the mines).

  16. Cross the bridge and immediately turn right to follow the path alongside the river. Continue to reach a kissing gate.

    The Country Park is on the site of Ennys Wheal Virgin (Ennys itself is a mediaeval settlement to the west of the park).

    Ennys Wheal Virgin was a copper and tin mine that began in the 1830s and despite raising quite a large amount of copper ore, the mine didn't make an overall profit. By 1847, most of the mine was closed and the engine was only kept running to prevent flooding in neighbouring Gurlyn Mine, located on the opposite side of the river. This also closed in 1848. However in the 1860s, both mines were re-opened and continued producing copper and also tin until 1904.

  17. Go through the kissing gate and follow the riverside path until you reach a waymark post with multiple yellow arrows.

    Damselfly eggs hatch not into damselflies but water-living nymphs which look a bit like a dull-coloured damselfly with a 3-forked tail instead of wings. The tail is actually a set of gills used to breath underwater. When the larva is fully developed, it climbs out of the water on a stem or rock. Its skin then splits open and a damselfly emerges with wings which need to be inflated and dry before it can fly.

  18. Turn left and follow the path into the woods. Continue until the path emerges into a small fenced grassy area.
  19. Head to the left corner of the grassy area and pass around the left end of the fence to reach the lane. Bear left onto the lane and follow this until it ends in a T-junction.

    Penberthy was recorded in 1309 as Penbyrghi. The name is based on the Cornish for "head of" followed by the name of the stream, which itself is thought to be Cornish for "speckled one".

  20. Turn left and follow the lane for just over a quarter of a mile until you reach a wider area of tarmac where footpaths depart either side and a Friendship Woods sign on the right.

    Cow parsnip (also known as "hogweed" - not to be confused with "giant hogweed") is a member of the carrot family. It has more solid leaves than cow parsley or alexanders which it often grows alongside. It also flowers later. The leaves are noticeable from around mid-April. Flowering starts roughly at the start of June and continues through the summer.

    Giant hogweed is regarded by some as the most dangerous plant in the UK (although hemlock is also a good contender). If you encounter giant hogweed, avoid touching it and children and dogs should be kept away from it as the sap contains a chemical which is extremely phototoxic. When activated by sunlight, this binds to the DNA in skin cells and kills them. Skin reaction starts as an itchy rash and can develop into third degree burns and scarring. It also makes the affected areas susceptible to severe sunburn for several years.

    The plant gets its name as it can grow more than 10 feet tall, topped with white umbrella-shaped flowers. Due to the similar style of flowers, it is also known as giant cow parsley although the giant hogweed leaves are much more solid with a toothed edge, more similar to cow parsnip (normal hogweed). It is typically found near water or on waste ground.

    The plant was introduced to Britain by Victorian botanists in the 19th century as an ornamental plant and has escaped from gardens into the wild. It has been spreading across the UK (as one plant produces 50,000 seeds) but is still very rare in Cornwall. A project to eradicate it along the Tamar River system is helping to stop further spread into Cornwall.

    Meadowsweet grows on damp ground and is particularly noticeable in July from its froth of cream-coloured flowers. As the name suggests, the flowers have a pleasant scent reminiscent of almond.

    Other names include "bridewort" as it was used in wedding garlands. It was also used for potpourri and as a "strewing" herb for floors in the 16th Century to reduce smells and infections.

    The flowers of meadowsweet are sometimes used in wine, beer and vinegar, or to give jams a subtle almond flavour. One of its names - "mead wort" - likely arose as a result of it being used to flavour mead.

    Meadowsweet contains salicylic acid and has been used in anti-inflammatory herbal remedies. However when extracted into a concentrated form to make into a drug, salicylic acid was found to cause stomach upsets. It was therefore synthetically altered to reduce the level of digestive upset and then marketed as "aspirin" based on the old Latin name for meadowsweet - Spiraea.

  21. Turn right and follow the path between the gates. Continue into a clearing and walk to the far end of this where a stony path departs from the right side of the trees.

    Penberthy Crofts was a mine producing tin, copper and lead. The mine included a smithy, engine house and storage magazines. There are records of it operating from 1789-1825 and from 1834 to the late 1840s. During the latter period, Wheal Fancy (on the opposite side of the road and active in the early 19th Century) was incorporated into Penberthy Crofts.

  22. Join the path and follow this downhill. When a wire fence on the right comes into view, keep left at the fork and keep following the path downhill through the mine tips and then through a tree tunnel to a junction of paths in an open area between the trees.

    Heather can grow in soils which have concentrations of metals normally considered toxic to other plants and they are also tolerant of salty (high sodium) environments on the coast. Their symbiosis with fungi restricts metal uptake through their roots.

  23. Continue ahead to pass the gate and follow the path along the very edge of the woods to where it peters out under the trees. Continue on the track through the woods to reach a gate onto a lane.

    The workings from Penberthy Croft Mine extended into this area and at the time it was devoid of trees. The remains of a chimney and flue lie within the undergrowth and one mineshaft (now also in the undergrowth) is also recorded on the 1st Edition OS map from 1876.

  24. Pass around the gate and turn left onto the lane. Walk a few paces to a junction to the right. Turn right here and walk a couple more paces to a small path on the left, just before a grey metal post on the right.
  25. Bear left onto the footpath and follow it through a gate into a campsite. Bear left onto the tarmac track and follow it to a crossroads with a 5 mph sign. Continue directly ahead from the end of the tarmac to cross the grass to a small wooden gate.

    The campsite was previously an area of mine workings. There are two mineshafts recorded on the 1st Edition OS map.

    Recreational camping was first popularised in the UK on the river Thames as an offshoot of the Victorian craze for pleasure boating. Early camping equipment was very heavy and so transporting it by boat was pretty much essential. By the 1880s it had become a pastime for large numbers of visitors.

  26. Go through the gate to reach a lane and cross this to a stone stile opposite. Follow the path into a field and then keep the hedge on your right. Continue to reach a gateway ahead into the next field.

    Researchers have found a recessive gene which appears to turn normal 3-leaf clovers into the 4-leaf version. Normally this is masked by the 3-leaf gene but environmental conditions can promote the 4-leaf form. Some domestic varieties have also been selectively bred to increase the proportion of 4-leaf plants. Genetically-engineered four leaf clovers are now a possibility with some farms in the USA reportedly already using genetic modification to churn-out thousands of plastic-sealed "lucky" charms per day.

  27. Cross the coffin stile on the right of the gate and continue ahead, keeping the hedge on your right. Follow the path to where it emerges beside a lane.

    Rabbits have a number of wild predators including foxes, polecats and stoats. Buzzards and weasels will also take young ones. Domestic cats are also capable of tackling a full-grown rabbit. Rabbits have evolved to be able to detect predators early and then run very fast. The location of their eyes on the sides of their head gives them almost 360 degree vision and they can also turn their ears 180 degrees to pinpoint the location of a sound.

  28. Bear right to reach some steps into the churchyard. Climb these and then bear left to keep the church on your right to reach the main door into the church.
  29. Bear left to exit the churchyard and turn left when you reach the lane. Walk past the heritage centre (formerly terraced cottages) to reach a track on the right beside the cemetery and marked with a Public Bridleway sign.

    The first record of St Hilary is from 1205 as de Sancto Elarlo. An early mediaeval inscribed stone was discovered in the foundations of the church together with the classic Celtic round shape of the churchyard suggests that the religious site may have been in use since the 6th Century.

    A later mediaeval church building was largely destroyed by fire in 1853 and was rebuilt in 1854 in a Victorian style with a spire. A couple of remnants survived the fire, notably the 13th Century tower base with carved faces and the 15th Century north doorway.

  30. Turn right onto the track and follow this a short distance to where it meets another track beside the Old Vicarage.

    A glebe was an area of land used to support the parish priest (in addition to a residence in the form of a parsonage or rectory). Occasionally the glebe included an entire farm. It was typically donated by the lord of the manor or cobbled together from several donated pieces of land.

  31. Bear left and follow the track past the riding stables until you reach a stone stile on the left before metal gates either side of the track.

    The oldest moth fossils found so far are from the Carboniferous period 300 million years ago. By the Middle Triassic (age of amphibians - before the dinosaurs), moths had evolved their proboscis used to collect nectar from flowers. Day-flying butterflies were on the scene in the Late Cretaceous (when Tyrannosaurs were around). Originally it was thought day-flying was to avoid night-flying bats but it's now thought more likely that this was mainly to take advantage of the abundance of nectar that was originally targeted at bees.

  32. Cross the stone stile just before the gate on the left and follow the path along the edge of the field to emerge between two buildings. Continue a short distance further on the track to where it meets the road.
  33. Carefully cross the road to the track opposite (Belvedere lane) and follow this between the national speed limit signs to reach a junction with a byway.

    During the 1960s, there was a failed attempt to introduce a 70mph speed limit to improve road safety. Then in 1973, a 50mph maximum speed limit was introduced on all roads as a temporary measure to save fuel during the oil crisis. This was replaced with a permanent 70mph motorway speed limit in 1974. In 1977, the speeds for single and dual carriageways were raised to 60 and 70mph.

  34. Keep right at the junction and continue following the track until it ends in a junction with a tarmacked lane.

    Dragonflies are named after the way they hunt, as both the larvae and adults are carnivorous predators. One dragonfly can eat tens of mosquitoes in a day and an average of over 100 per day has been recorded for the nymphs of some species. It is thought that this is an important factor in keeping the mosquito population under control. Dragonfly nymphs have a massive lower jaw to engulf their prey (a bit like an Angler Fish) and are also able to propel themselves by shooting a jet of water out of their anus.

  35. Turn left and follow the lane past a junction signposted to St Erth. Continue a short distance further to reach a stony track on the left with a "Colenso Cross" sign opposite the junction for Prussia Cove.

    Even up to the 16th Century, magpies were simply known as "pies" from the Old French word pie (related to the Latin word for magpie - pica). The term "pied" meaning "black-and-white" (as in pied wagtail) is from the magpie's colouration. It's also possible that the pastry thing we now know as a pie (which can be traced back to Mediaeval Latin) was named after the magpie. It has been speculated that the assortment of ingredients in the pastry crust was likened to objects collected in a magpie nest. The "mag" in the modern name is a (somewhat sexist) mediaeval slang word for someone who chatters, based on the name Margaret.

  36. Turn left and follow the track to a fork with a waymark with multicoloured arrows.
  37. Keep left to follow the byway ahead (red arrow) to complete the circular walk.

    The hollyberry cotoneaster is native to Western China. It was one of the species collected in Victorian expeditions and was made available as a cultivated plant in 1898. Since then it has spread into the wild both in Europe and also New Zealand. The red berries on which its common name is based form in August after a flowering period from May to July. They are actually part of the rose family and are related to hawthorns - hence the red berries which blackbirds are particularly fond of.

Water mint is a wild species of mint which grows in damp places or even in water. It can be recognised by leaves and the strong mint smell when these are crushed. It produces a ball of lilac flowers in late summer.

Water mint will hybridise with spearmint and this creates peppermint (which itself is sterile).

Water mint and peppermint have high levels of menthol whereas the sweeter flavour of spearmint comes from a different chemical called carvone. Menthol creates a cold feeling on the skin by activating the sensory receptors in a similar way that chilli creates a heat sensation.

Dragonflies were some of the first winged insects to evolve, around 300 million years ago in the "age of amphibians" before the dinosaurs. Fossils of early dragonflies have been found with wingspans of up to two feet across.

Their two sets of wings beat out of phase, and the frequency, amplitude and the angles of each set of wings can be controlled. This allows dragonflies to hover in a completely stationary position for over a minute, perform extravagant aerobatic manoeuvres and even fly backwards.

Several species of heather grow in Cornwall and are most easily recognised when they flower from July to September. The one with the most brightly coloured (purple) flowers is known as bell heather due to the bell-shaped flowers. This is the earliest one to start flowering - normally in June. Bell heather is usually interspersed with ling or common heather which has much smaller flowers which are usually paler and pinker and come out at the start of July. A third kind known as cross-leafed heath is less abundant but can be recognised by the pale pink bell-shaped flowers that grow only near the tips of the stems, resembling pink lollipops. A fourth species known as Cornish heath grows only on the Lizard and has more elaborate flowers which are mostly pale with a dark purple crown at the front.

Heathers and heaths are members of the Ericaceae family. The formal definition of a heather is a member of the Calluna genus within this family whereas heaths are members of the Erica genus. Bell heather is actually an Erica and therefore technically not a heather but a heath.

Heather plants have a symbiotic relationship with fungi which grows inside and between some of the plant root cells. Up to 80% of the root structure can be made up of fungi. The fungi are able to extract nutrients from poor, acidic soils that plants struggle with. In return, the plant is able to generate other nutrients (e.g. sugars by photosynthesis) that are useful to the fungi. A similar partnership between plants and fungi occurs in lichens.

Heather can grow in soils which have concentrations of metals normally considered toxic to other plants and they are also tolerant of salty (high sodium) environments on the coast. Their symbiosis with fungi restricts metal uptake through their roots.

Heather plants can live up to 40 years and over time they form woody stems. This provides them with a way of excreting heavy metals that they absorb by locking it up in the layers of dead wood (found by researchers as the areas in the plant with the highest concentrations). Their woody stems have also found many uses over the centuries including fuel, thatch and ropes. One other use has made it into the genus name for heather - kallune is Greek for "to brush".

Geese migrate to warmer climates for the winter and fly in a V-shaped formation known as a skein or wedge (on the ground, a collection of geese is known as a gaggle). The V-formation allows birds behind the leader to fly more efficiently as the rising air from flapping wings of the bird ahead helps to support the weight of the one behind. This can increase the range that the bird can fly by over 70%. The birds each take it in turns to do the harder job of flying at the front.

Water pepper, as the name implies, grows on wet ground such as on the margins of lakes (it's also known as marsh pepper). It's relatively late to appear, not really getting going until June.

Another of water pepper's common names is "smartarse". As Emma Gunn points out in her foraging book "Never Mind the Burdocks", this is nothing to do with being clever: in the past, the dried leaves were added to bedding to drive away fleas etc. and the name comes from rolling over on a leaf in the wrong way.

Water pepper leaves can be used as a herb and has a lemony flavour similar to sorrel followed by heat which is a little like chilli. It's used in Japanese cuisine, particularly with fish. The young shoots are used to garnish sushi or sashimi.

The plant is unpalatable to livestock but is eaten by some insects which has given rise to a Japanese saying which transliterates to "Some insects eat water pepper and like it" but is used more like "There's no accounting for taste".

Pond skaters are able to stand on the surface of water due to long legs and water-repellent hairs on their feet.

The weight on each foot is less than the combined cohesive forces between water molecules ("surface tension") around it. Their long legs space out their feet so that the dents in the water's surface from each foot don't connect.

However, in order to walk on water, pond skaters must exert extra force to propel themselves which if applied to the surface of the water would sink them. The very tips of the water-repellent hairs on their feet penetrate the surface of the water and these create swirling vortices like tiny oars. The vortices transfer momentum down below the surface of the water so the surface of the water doesn't need to take all the force.

Gorse is a legume, related to peas and like other members of the pea family it's able to get its nitrogen from the air. It's also tolerant to heavy metals in the soil and to salt. This makes it able to grow in Cornwall's harshest environments: moorland, coast and mine waste tips.

Like other members of the pea family, gorse produces its seeds in pods. The seeds are ejected with a popping sound when pods split open in hot weather. This can catapult the seeds up to five metres. The plants are able to live 30 years and survive sub-zero temperatures, the seeds can withstand fire and remain viable in the soil for 30 years.

Gorse seeds each contain a small body of ant food. The seeds also release a chemical which attracts ants from some distance away. The ants carry the seeds to their nests, eat the ant food and then discard the seeds, helping them to disperse.

The seeds of common gorse are the source of the chemical used to identify people with the rare "hh" blood group. The red blood cells in the vast majority of people (in blood groups A, B, AB and O) have a material called "H substance" on their surface. It turns out that the chemical extracted from gorse binds remarkably specifically to this and cells from the "hh" blood group (that have no H substance) are left alone.

Gorse is also known (particularly in the Westcountry) as furze from the Middle English word furs. This itself is from the Old English word fyres, closely related to the Old English word for fire.

Before the Industrial Revolution, gorse was valued as a fuel for bread ovens and kilns as it burns rapidly, very hot and with little ash. It was in such demand that there were quite strict rules about how much gorse could be cut on common land.

In more recent times, due to reliance on fossil fuels, this is now out of balance and gorse has increased in rural areas which have been abandoned agriculturally.

As gorse ages, it accumulates more dead material. The spiky, springy nature of the plant even when dead means air can circulate well through the dead material and when this dries out in the summer, it substantially increases the risk of fires. As gorse seeds have evolved to withstand fire, controlled burning can be used to keep the gorse at a young age where uncontrolled fires are less likely.

Gorse is present as two species along the Atlantic coast and size is the easiest way to tell them apart: Common Gorse bushes are up to 10ft tall whereas Western Gorse is more of a mat - less than 1ft tall. Common Gorse flowers in spring whereas Western Gorse flowers in late summer - early autumn.

In 2005 a man had to be rescued from a 10ft deep patch of coastal gorse by helicopter. Whilst mountain biking home along the coast from a bar, with the assistance of a not insignificant amount of alcohol, he managed to catapult himself into the bushes where he remained stuck for 2 days before being found by a passer-by. She asked if he needed help, to which he replied "can you ring the RAF?".

Between the two species, some gorse is almost always in flower, hence the old country phrases: "when gorse is out of blossom, kissing's out of fashion" (which is recorded from the mid-19th century) and "when the furze is in bloom, my love's in tune" (which dates from the mid-18th century). Common gorse flowers are bright yellow. Western gorse flowers are very slightly more orange - more like the colour of the "yolk" in a Cadbury's creme egg. Also like creme eggs, gorse flowers are edible but are significantly better for use in salads and to make a tea, beer or wine.

Common gorse flowers have a coconut-like scent but rather than fresh coconut, it is reminiscent of desiccated coconut or the popular brand of surf wax, Mr Zoggs. However, not everyone experiences the smell in the same way: for some people it's very strong and for others it quite weak. One complicating factor is that Western Gorse flowers don't have any scent, so you need to be sniffing a tall gorse plant to test yourself.

Flower scents are volatile organic compounds which drift though the air and has evolved as an advertisement to pollinating insects that nectar is available. Squeezing the flowers releases these compounds onto the surface where they can evaporate and therefore intensifies the smell. Similarly the warming effect of sunlight helps the compounds to evaporate faster and so the smell is more intense on sunny days.

Gorse flower wine can be made using 5 litres of gorse flowers stripped from the stems and simmering these in 5 litres of boiling water. Once the flowers are removed, 1.3kg of sugar should be dissolved in the hot water and allowed to cool to room temperature. Then add 500g of chopped raisins and juice and zest of 2 lemons and ferment with white wine yeast and yeast nutrient. Although flowers are present year-round, they are best picked in spring (April and May) when they are most profuse and fragrant.

Plants such as gorse and heather which are able to grow in soils contaminated with heavy metals such as mine waste tips are known as metallophytes.

There was a concern that if the plants accumulated the metals, whilst themselves being unharmed by them, these might still pass into the food chain e.g. via rabbits eating the plants and then onto buzzards eating rabbits etc.

However, a study of plants from the Carnon Valley found that gorse and heather do not accumulate large quantities of trace metals or arsenic in their tissue. A separate study for a PhD thesis found that for some metals such as zinc, the amount in the plant's tissues (though far lower than in the soil) increased steadily with the levels in the soil. However for certain heavy metals such as lead and copper, the amount measured in gorse tissues appeared to barely increase at all with increasing levels in soil.

Therefore it's thought that there are unlikely to be harmful effects of rabbits eating gorse and heather both directly to the rabbits themselves and indirectly to the food chain of other wildlife.

The blackbird is a species of thrush. The name "blackbird" is mediaeval, first recorded in 1486. Since most of the crow family is also black, plus many seabirds, the choice of this particular species for the name is thought to be due to its size. Up to the 18th Century, larger birds such as crows were referred to as "fowl" and the term "bird" was only used for smaller species.

The Old English name for the blackbird was osle and up to the 17th Century this survived as in alternative names for the blackbird ranging from ouzel to woosel. One of these is used in A Midsummer Night's Dream by Shakespeare: "The ousel cock, so black of hew, with orange-tawny bill".

Only male blackbirds are actually black. The females are brown. The difference in appearance between males and females is known as sexual dimorphism and is an evolutionary strategy by the males to get noticed more by females at the cost of decreased chances of survival.

Blackbirds can be found in deciduous woodland, particularly where there is dense undergrowth. In the man-made landscape, hedges provide plenty of dense undergrowth and have consequently become a really important habitat for blackbirds. Moreover, many gardens have such a high density of hedges and bushes that they are able to support ten times the blackbird population versus an equivalent area of their natural woodland habitat.

Blackbirds are one of the most common birds in the UK with a population of somewhere between 10 and 15 million. However, blackbirds were in steady decline from the 1970s through to the mid-1990s. The population has only relatively recently recovered.

Blackbirds begin singing from around the end of January but it is normally the overkeen young males initially - the older, wiser males wait until March, pacing themselves for the singing period which continues into the early summer. Blackbirds have been shown to sing more during and after rain but exactly why is not yet known.

Baby blackbirds usually leave the nest before they can actually fly then hop and scramble through the bushes. Their parents watch over them so don't attempt to rescue them.

Blackbirds in the UK are resident all year round but the blackbirds that live further north (e.g. in Norway) migrate south for the winter. To help with migration and also to avoid being eaten by predators, blackbirds can sleep half their brain at a time. This allows them to get some rest whilst still maintaining enough alertness to fly or spot predators.

The reference in the nursery rhyme "sing a song a sixpence" to "four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie" is thought to be to the 16th Century amusement (though not for the blackbirds) of producing a large pie which included an empty chamber. After the pie had been baked and was ready to be served, a trapdoor would be cut in the empty chamber and live birds were placed inside which would fly out when the pie was cut open. Live frogs were sometimes used as an alternative.

In the Christmas carol "The Twelve Days of Christmas", the line "four colly birds" is thought to be from 18th Century slang meaning "black as coal" and was a popular nickname for the blackbird. Whilst many people today sing and write "four calling birds", this is thought to be a modern misunderstanding of what was originally written.

Hemp agrimony is a fairly tall plant that grows in damp places and produces large number of tiny pink flowers from July to September, hence an alternative common name of "raspberries and cream". The flowers are rich in nectar so bees and butterflies are often found on them. It's one of the later plants to be in flower in the hedgerows so it keeps bees and butterflies going during the early autumn.

It is unrelated to hemp and also to plants in agrimony family. The reason for "hemp" in common name and "cannabinum" in the Latin name is because the leaves look a bit like cannabis. A name of "holy rope" has also been used for it which may be another reference to hemp.

Trout are members of the Salmon family who all have an extra tiny (adipose) fin on their back towards their tail, that most other fish don't have. No-one is quite sure what the purpose is of this fin but a neural network in the fin indicates that it has some kind of sensory function.

The trout that supermarkets and trout farms stock is the Rainbow Trout (which has a red flush along its side) and is native to North America not to the UK. Our native trout is the Brown Trout which has well-defined dark red spots along its sides. You can often make out the spots when you see them lying in pools. Rainbow Trout are often stocked in fishing lakes so do sometimes escape into the wild.

Small trout typically feed on invertebrates whereas larger trout generally feed on other fish but have been known to eat anything of a suitable size unlucky enough to fall into a river. In fact in New Zealand, mouse-shaped lures are sold for trout fishing!

The Hayle River is 12 miles long and has its source near Crowan. The river's course initially runs west for 5 miles into what was once the lagoon separating Penwith from the mainland when sea levels were higher. The river then follows this valley north for the remainder of its course. The river flows through a number of old mining sites and consequently there are quite high concentrations of metals in the water. The river and the settlement near its mouth get their name from the Cornish word for estuary.

Stoats and weasels are related to badgers and to otters, which they more closely resemble. The stoat is roughly twice the size of a weasel but can be distinguished without the need to measure it by its black-tipped tail. The weasel preys mostly on voles, but the stoat will take on prey much larger than itself including birds and even full-grown rabbits. During the winter, the coat of the stoat (and also some populations of weasel) changes colour from brown to white to camouflage it in the snow.

The soft, silky winter fur of the stoat is known as ermine and garments made from this were a luxury associated with royalty and high status. Given that stoats mark their territory using pungent anal scent glands, it’s likely a fair amount of washing of the furs occurred before being draped over royalty.
